With Curriculum Developer and Early Childhood Educator Melissa Tonachel & NH Partner Site Director of Mikva Challenge, Amanda Maguire
How do children participate in the lives of their communities? How can educators create public platforms for children’s increased engagement? What tools and information do children need to develop the self-awareness, community-awareness, and confidence required to participate most meaningfully in their worlds?
In the first part of this workshop, teachers will consider what it means to educate young children for social and civic engagement, learn about the work in the Boston Public Schools’ K-2 classrooms, and design plans and materials for use in their own classrooms with Melissa Tonachel. The session will include interactive presentation and guided work with partners or small groups. Materials will include examples from the Boston Public Schools curricula, readings, and planning sheets. In the second part of this workshop, NH Partner Site Director of Mikva Challenge, Amanda Maguire, will present on Project Soapbox for grades K-5. Project Soapbox is a public speaking program facilitated by Mikva Challenge that calls young people to speak out on issues that affect them and their communities. The students are asked to research, prepare, and deliver a two-minute call to action speech answering the question: What is the most important issue facing your community?
Breakfast and lunch will be provided.
5 PD hours for day only participation.
10 PD hours and $75 stipend for full participation (day participation, follow up in your classroom, submitted lesson and reflection submitted to NH Civics by Jan. 31, 2023).

Amanda is a former social studies teacher originally from Franklin. Amanda taught social studies at Franklin High School before transitioning to a classroom teacher and then administrator at Second Start Alternative High School in Concord. She brings a passion for justice and engagement and an excitement to have the opportunity to support social studies teachers across the state.
Melissa Tonachel has been an early childhood educator for over thirty years, teaching preschool through second grade in community-based and public school classrooms in and around Boston and early childhood development at Lesley University, before landing at the Boston Public Schools Early Childhood Department in 2013. She has contributed to a number of presentations, articles, and books on topics such as emotional development through storytelling, nurturing feedback and dialogue with children, early childhood policy, and professional development. Currently, Melissa is primarily charged with guiding the development of multi-disciplinary, project- and place-based, standards-aligned, voice-amplifying ELA curricula for kindergarten through second grade in Boston Public Schools. She believes that any legitimate curriculum must reflect, include, draw upon, and expand the experiences of those who interact with it; that this work can be accomplished only with the collaboration of children, families, teachers, and diverse colleagues.
