NH Civics at Association of Children’s Museums Conference

Executive Director, Martha Madsen, presented on Early Civics in Museums

NH Civics Executive Director, Martha Madsen, presented at InterActivity 2022- Association of Children’s Museums (ACM) Conference in Saint Louis, MO in May 2022.

Madsen along with colleagues from The History Co: Lab, Strawbery Banke Museum, Children’s Museum and Theater of Maine, and the Acton, MA Discovery Museum presented on how children’s museums can integrate civics, especially early civics, into their programming.

“Put your hands up if you think children’s museums should focus on civics.” A resounding YES from museum professionals at the InterActivity 2022 Conference.

When asked to put their hands up if they thought museums should focus on civics, the room full of 50 museum professionals in attendance enthusiastically raised their hands. Evaluations of the presentation were uniformly excellent. Madsen visited the Magic House in Saint Louis, and its Star Spangled Center that makes the three branches of government and how they interact fun and engaging. Learn more here

Collaborations with local children’s museums are one of the ways that NH Civics is centering early civic learning, meeting a national need for such programming. In addition, NH Civics will also pilot an early civics curriculum in the 2022-2023 school year.
